hastings contemporary

Celeste Elliot ⋅ 24th February 2022
Black reflective tiles: sensitive. Unified, minimalist look, but not divorced from landscape?
Hastings is employing a new model for selling art. They have teamed up with independent(?) artists and offered to show their art at the gallery, but as they operate as a nonprofit, they do not collect a commission on the sale of any works. The gallery does not communicate or negotiate the sale of the works–buyers must reach out to the artists directly via Instagram.
All the works for sale in this exhibition are priced at 200 pounds or less.
A floor-ceiling window on the second floor of the gallery, overlooking the ‘working beach’ of retired tractors and fishing boats.

british modernism at the Tate::part 1

Celeste Elliot ⋅ 22nd February 2022
Ben Nicholson, 1935 (white relief) 1935

“In defiance of the increasingly antagonistic Nationalism engulfing Europe, [their?] position was explicitly internationalist and utopian. The compositional quietude of [these] white reliefs provided an aesthetic model for a possible social harmony.” –Tate Britain

king solomon’s temple in Jerusalem

Celeste Elliot ⋅ 20th February 2022

“Said Rabbi Levi: According to the normal practice, when a person constructs a dining-hall he makes its windows narrower on the outside and broader on the inside in order to draw light inward. However, the windows of the holy Temple were not like that. Instead, they were narrow on the inside and wide on the outside in order to radiate light to the world.”
